Круговая орбита, которая расположена ниже первого радиационного пояса Ван Аллена (см. рис. L-1) на высоте от 700 до 2000 км. Период обращения спутника на этих высотах составляет от 100 до 120 мин. Максимальное время пребывания КА в зоне радиовидимости не превышает 10-15 мин. Для обеспечения глобального охвата количество спутников в орбитальной группировке должно быть не менее 48.
